Our latest mindful book recommendation is:
You are Here by David Nicholls.
It’s a Number One bestseller and was described as “sharp-tongued and irresistible”, which made it feel like the perfect choice for Husband Calm to take away with him recently. The book travelled across the world in his bag and quickly became a constant companion, brought out at every opportunity instead of endless phone scrolling.
One of the reasons we wanted to share this book is that Husband Calm is not usually an avid reader, so the fact that You are Here held his attention so completely really says something. He found it warm, witty and very easy to sink into, with characters who felt believable and relatable rather than overly polished. The story follows Marnie, a lonely copy-editor in London, and Michael, a geography teacher reeling from the end of his marriage, who are brought together on a long-distance walk across northern England. As the journey unfolds, so do their conversations, vulnerabilities and sense of possibility, so the novel feels like both a physical adventure and an emotional one.
Husband Calm also connected deeply with the book’s theme of the love of the outdoors. Because he has been enjoying spending more time in nature recently and finds that it always helps with his stress levels, the walking elements of the story really resonated with him. It was lovely to read about the landscape through the eyes of the characters and to be reminded how restorative our surroundings can be when we really take them in. As the author puts it:
“Time is a sensation that alters depending on where you are,” and that feeling comes through so strongly in the sections set among the fells, moors and changing weather. Another line we loved was:
“The trick is to change the way you think about time. It’s no use thinking in minutes or hours or days, or even generations. You’ve got to adjust the scale, think in terms of millennia.” It feels like such a powerful reminder of what nature can do for us — helping us step outside our everyday worries, widen our perspective and feel calmer and more grounded. More than anything, it left us wanting to slow down, look up and feel more connected to the environment around us.
What we admired most was how observant and human the writing felt. There is plenty of dry humour, but there is also real emotional depth underneath it, and that balance is one of the things the author David Nicholls does so well. It seems this novel has been widely praised for its warmth, tenderness and its thoughtful portrayal of modern loneliness and second chances, and we can completely understand why. One line that captures that honesty beautifully is:
“There is who we want to be, she thought, and there is who we are.” Overall, You are Here is a funny, thoughtful and quietly uplifting read about connection, healing and finding your way again when life has not gone to plan. If you enjoy contemporary fiction with heart, sharp dialogue and a strong sense of place, this is one we would absolutely recommend adding to your reading list!
